- GMDN category: Barrier, absorbable, adhesion prevention
Intended purpose
This device is an absorbable bovine collagen barrier membrane used to prevent abnormal fibrous union of one organ, or other internal body part, to another.
Functional description
Biomend is placed between the hard tissue (bone) and soft tissue (gingiva, periosteum, epithelial) layers of the human maxilla and mandible (upper and lower jaw) in an effort to create an impenetrable physical barrier. The barrier ensures that the soft tissue (which regenerates at a significantly faster rate than hard tissue) does not migrate into the hard tissue zone during the regeneration phase, allowing the bone to remodel to the appropriate volume and structure.
