- GMDN category: Ultrasonic surgical system generator
Intended purpose
An electrosurgical device that is used for cutting and coagulating soft body tissue during surgery by the application of a high frequency electrical current generated by the device, which is converted, typically within the electrode handpiece, into an ultrasonic/mechanical vibration (high frequency oscillation). Using ultrasonic/mechanical vibration and possibly a combination of irrigation and suction at the electrode unit, it fragments by disrupting the cells, enabling the removal of soft tissue and growths of high water concentration from various body parts. It is used during, e.g., neurosurgery, general surgery (hepatic, spleen, pancreas), surgical oncology, gynaecology, and urology.
