Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators are implantable devices that work as part of a system comprising the ICD unit along with pacing and ICD leads to monitor heart rhythm and detect arrhythmias. These devices are used to terminate ventricular tachycardia through antitachycardia pacing or shock delivery, terminate atrial tachycardia through antitachycardia pacing, terminate ventricular fibrillation through shock delivery, and correct bradycardia through atrial, ventricular or atrioventricular sequential pacing in patients with life-threatening arrhythmias.
