Bite blocks are devices inserted into a patient's mouth to maintain oral patency during endoscopic procedures, primarily protecting the endoscope from damage caused by the patient's natural tendency to bite down on the instrument , and also providing protection of the tongue and teeth . These single-use devices are used during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to facilitate safe instrument passage and visualisation whilst preventing oral trauma.
