Endoscopic oxygenating bite blocks are dual-purpose devices inserted into a patient's mouth to maintain patency during endoscopic procedures and protect the endoscope from being damaged by the patient's bite reflex , whilst simultaneously providing uninterrupted oxygen flow during and after the procedure and protecting the tongue and teeth . These devices are used in patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy to allow safe passage of endoscopic equipment through the mouth , with optional capabilities to monitor expired carbon dioxide during the procedure .
