Treadmills are devices that impose speed and inclination to create controlled walking or running environments , and they can be operated manually or controlled by external medical equipment such as electrocardiography or pulmonary devices to obtain physiological data . These devices are used as stressing instruments for neuromuscular, biomechanical, cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary measurements , and may also be applied for rehabilitation or active ageing therapy .
