Oscillating positive expiratory pressure devices are hand-held mechanical instruments that create vibrations in the chest wall when a patient exhales into them, with a high-density stainless steel ball rapidly fluctuating to loosen mucus for expectoration and assist in lung expansion. These devices are typically used to remove excessive mucus from the lungs and upper airways of patients with cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, bronchitis, or bronchiectasis, and to treat and prevent atelectasis.
