Ankle-foot orthoses are prefabricated, externally applied and wearable appliances intended to encompass the ankle joint, or the ankle and foot, to support, align, prevent or correct orthopaedic deformities and injuries. They are used to support stiff, sore, weak or injured ankle and may improve function of the ankle and foot through alignment, hinge-support, or dorsiflexion assistance, whilst also offloading and redistributing shear pressure affecting vulnerable areas of skin on the ankle and foot.
