Ear specula are funnel-shaped devices inserted into the ear canal to facilitate viewing and examination of the eardrum and outer ear canal , with tubular or expanding working ends available in different lengths, diameters, blade shapes, and configurations . They are used to inspect the ear canal and eardrum in paediatric and adult patients , typically with an otoscope that provides illumination for the examination .
