Vaginal specula are hand-held manual instruments that dilate the vagina after insertion, typically consisting of two long blades joined at a handle that are inserted horizontally and then opened to form an angle, or alternatively a soft-material device inflated after insertion that allows viewing and access through a central channel. These devices are intended for visual examination of the vaginal canal and cervix and to perform gynaecological procedures of the vaginal and cervical area.
