Cochlear implant systems work by evoking auditory sensations via electrical stimulation of the auditory pathways. These devices are used for severely to profoundly hearing impaired individuals who obtain little or no benefit from acoustic amplification, as well as for partially deaf individuals who benefit from acoustic amplification in lower frequencies only when combined with electric-acoustic stimulation.
