Emergency tourniquets are devices designed for rapid application to a limb in case of major haemorrhage , whilst other tourniquet designs apply pressure to the arm to control circulation and prevent the flow of blood to or from the distal area . Emergency tourniquets are used to stop heavy, life-threatening bleeding of the upper and lower extremities of adults and teens when bleeding is unmanageable in other ways , and disposable tourniquets are used for intravenous access and venesection .
