Absorbent, carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide absorbents are granular materials of treated soda lime placed into reusable absorbers that remove carbon dioxide from exhaled gases in patient breathing circuits through chemical reaction , with colour changes during use to indicate when replacement is needed . These devices are used in closed or semi-closed re-breathing circuits during anaesthesia to remove carbon dioxide that builds up in the anaesthesia system .
