Heat and moisture exchangers are passive, canister-like devices that connect in-line with a patient's artificial airway to capture exhaled heat and moisture and use them to warm and humidify inspired gases. These devices are positioned over a tracheostomy or tracheal tube in patients requiring artificial airway management to condition gases entering the respiratory system.
