Iris retractors are single-use flexible ophthalmic surgical instruments designed as hooks that are positioned over the iris margin and retracted to mechanically widen the pupil diameter temporarily during ophthalmic surgery in the posterior chamber of the eye. They are used when pharmacological dilatation of the iris is not possible or ineffective to facilitate surgical access through the pupillary opening.
