Orthopaedic bone screws are small sterile threaded rods with slotted heads made of non-absorbable materials such as surgical steel, titanium alloy, or carbon fibre, used for internal fracture fixation by being screwed into bone to hold plates or nails to bone or to provide direct interfragmentary stabilisation of bone, or to fasten soft tissue to bone. These devices are used for fixation of intra-articular and extra-articular fractures and non-unions of small bones and small bone fragments, arthrodesis of small joints, and procedures such as bunionectomies and osteotomies involving carpal bones, metacarpals, tarsals, metatarsals, patella, ulnar styloid, capitellum, and radial head.
