Punctal occluders, sometimes referred to as plugs, are devices indicated for the treatment of dry eye syndrome. They are inserted into the punctal opening by a certified physician to totally or partially block tear drainage through the canaliculus , thus maintaining lubricating tears on the corneal surface of the eye. Dry eye syndrome is a condition where there is insufficient lubrication in the eye and the conjunctiva becomes much less moist than normal , and these devices are used in dry eye patients to reduce or eliminate tear drainage.
