Hip femoral stem prostheses are components of femoral systems made of a hip stem and ceramic head , used in total hip arthroplasty to replace the hip joint and provide increased patient mobility and reduce pain where sufficient sound bone exists to support the components . These devices are indicated for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head or neck, acute traumatic fracture of the femoral head or neck, and revision of unsuccessful previous hip surgery .
